Cancer……What is it?
Cancer means a new growth, an abnormal mass of tissue, the growth of which is uncontrolled and exceeds that of normal tissue and persists in the same manner even after the cessation of stimuli which evoked the change. It adheres to any part that it seizes in an obstinate manner like a crab and invades and destroys the surrounding structures and spreads to distant sites to cause death.
Most of the cancers have unknown aetiology(causes). It is said to be caused by many contributing factors collaborating over a long period of time. How-ever some of them listed are as follows
1) Carcinogens
2) Cancer promoters
3) Genetics
4) Family history
5) Lifestyle factors
6) Environmental influences
7) Viruses
8) Biological influences
9) Psychological Influences.
Warning Signal changes that might be because of cancer
1. Persisting white or red patch in the oral cavity.
2. Change in the bowel or bladder habit.
3. A sore that does not heal.
4. Unusual bleeding or discharge.
5. Thickening or lump in the breast or elsewhere.
6. Indigestion or difficulty in swallowing.
7. Obvious change in wart or mole.
8. Nagging cough or hoarseness.
The main cause is breakdown of the immune system resulting in uncontrolled growth of cells resulting in multi-systemic effects. Therefore, no single line of treatment can serve as a complete effective 100% sure cure for cancer. Hence the approach should be multidimensional with the focus being on the well -being of the patient rather than focussing on the tumour only. Thus there is a dire need of an integrated approach of treatment towards cancer.
Cancer Care Treatment: Standard or Conventional Cancer Care.
· It involves surgical removal of the diseased part or tumour.
· Chemotherapy /Radiotherapy or both which controls the uncontrolled multiplication of cells.
· Strengthening of the immune system by use of immune-modulators.
· Addressing the weakened immune system through Alternative Complementary Medicines via integrative oncology.
What is integrative oncology or integrated cancer care?
Integrative oncology is a patient centred field of cancer that refers to the use of complementary medicine therapies in conjunction with conventional standard cancer care. This includes use of holistic approach via use of homeopathy /Ayurveda/Unani/Siddha medicines, mistletoe therapy, ozone therapy, acupuncture, yoga, meditation, counselling, Reiki and specialised treatment forms such as movement therapy and art therapies.
Hence Integrative oncology treatment involves the following modalities which can be used in single or in combination. The Treatment modalities available are:
1)Homeopathy
2)Mistletoe Therapy
3)Ozone therapy
4)High dose Intravenous Therapy
5)Medical cannabis
6)Use of various supplements as indicated.
Mistletoe Therapy in Cancer Care: A boon for cancer patients.
Mistletoe is a semi-parasitic plant that grows on several types of trees including apple, oak, maple, elm, pine and birch which serve as host trees for the mistletoe plant. It is one of the most widely studied complementary and alternative medicine therapies for cancer. It is one of the most researched natural medicine in cancer. They are extracts made from fermented aqueous extracts of freshly harvested white-berried European Mistletoe. It is used extensively in European countries as an Anthroposophic drug in cancer. They are available as injectable by the name of ISCADOR, HELIXOR, ABNOBA, ISCUCIN, ISOREL etc.
In India and Europe, the commonest and oldest is ISCADOR preparation. It has now been a 100 years since its discovery in 1917.
What is Iscador?
Iscador is a specially processed fermented aqueous extract of the white berried European mistletoe growing on different host trees. They were discovered by Dr Rudolf Steiner and Ita Wegman. Rudolf Steiner was the founder of anthroposophic medicine in Switzerland. Mistletoe Therapy was introduced into cancer care treatment at the Lukas Clinic in Arlesheim, Switzerland in 1963.
It is the most widely studied complementary therapy in cancer care treatment due to its unique properties of dual action of inhibiting the growth of the tumour and on the other hand it also causes activation and stimulation of the immune system.
Mistletoe products may be named according to the type of host trees on which the plant grows and are used currently to treat various malignant conditions.
Iscador Mali (M) - from apple tree.
Iscador Quercus(Qu) –from oak tree.
Iscador Pini (P) –from pine tree.
Mode of administration: They are available in the form of injectable by subcutaneous injections under the skin like Insulin either on the abdomen or near the site of the tumour.

Ozone Therapy:
Ozone can selectively inhibit cancer cell growth for cancers of the lung, breast and the uterus. It can enhance the tumour fighting ability of standard cancer drugs. It was found to selectively block the division of cancer cells and this positive effect increased as ozone doses got stronger until all cancer cell activity was virtually halted at high doses……it stimulates the activity of cytokines, natural cancer killing proteins.
It greatly reduces pain while increasing energy levels and appetite. Patients on ozone therapy have been free of metastasis and recurrences for long period of time and thus the survival time is prolonged far exceeding the prognosis of conventional treatment and most patients who had undergone ozone therapy shorty after surgery and radiation could return to full time work.
Ozone cannot be used alone. It needs to be combined with a proper diet, homoeopathy, supplements, herbs, botanicals and acupuncture.
High Dose Intravenous Vitamin C Therapy (HDIVC) – Vitamin C in Cancer
Vitamin C is a major water-soluble antioxidant which is responsible for proper immune cell functioning. The IV Vitamin C protocol involves slow infusion of vitamin C at doses on the order of 0.1 to 1.0 grams ascorbate per kilogram body mass.
HDIVC was first suggested as the tool for cancer treatment in the 1950s.
Published case study reports anti-cancer efficacy, improved patient well-being and decreases in markers of inflammation and tumour growth. Phase 1 clinical studies indicate that IVC can be administered safely with relatively few adverse effects.
Cancer patients tend to be depleted of Vitamin C. In a study of cancer patients in hospice case, Maylands and co-workers found that thirty percent of the subjects were deficiency in Vitamin C (Maylands, et al.,2005). Deficiency (Below 10uM) was corrected with elevated CRP levels and shorter survival times.
Given the role of vitamin C in immune system functioning, and antioxidant production, the subjects depleted of ascorbate would fare poorly in mounting defences against cancer, hence Supplementation to replenish Vitamin C stored might serve as adjunctive therapy for these patients.
High Dose IVC has the ability to Induce
· Tumour cell apoptosis,
· Inhibit angiogenesis and
· Reduce inflammation.
· Improvement in the quality of life in Cancer patients with benefits including improved global quality of life scores, less fatigue , reduction in nausea and vomiting and improved appetite.
High dose Vitamin C IV can stabilize a majority of cancer cases, arresting growth and spread of tumours. Good results are seen in
· Lymphoma
· Non-small cell lung cancer
· Cholangiocarcinoma
· Breast Cancer
· Kidney Cancer
· Bladder Cancer
· Prostate Cancer
· Colon Cancer
Action of HDIVC
The molecular shape of Vitamin C is remarkably similar to glucose . Cancer cells will actively transport Vitamin C into themselves, possibly because they mistake it for glucose. Another plausible explanation is that they are using the Vitamin C as an Antioxidant. Regardless, the Vitamin C accumulates in cancer cells.
If large amounts of Vitamin C are presented to Cancer cells, large amounts will be absorbed. In these unusually large concentrations, the Antioxidant Vitamin C will start behaving as a Pro-Oxidant as it interacts with intracellular Copper and Iron. This chemical interaction produces small amounts of Hydrogen Peroxide.
Because cancer cells are relatively low in an intracellular Anti-Oxidant enzyme called catalase, the High Dose Vitamin C induction of peroxide will continue to build up until it eventually lyses the cancer cell from the inside out! This effectively makes high dose IVC a non-toxic chemotherapeutic agent that can be given in conjunction with conventional cancer treatments. Vitamin C was selectively toxic to cancer cells if given intravenously.
As feared by many oncologists, small doses may actually help the cancer cells because small amounts of Vitamin C may help the cancer cells arm themselves against the free-radical induced damage caused by chemotherapy and radiation. Only markedly higher doses of Vitamin C will selectively build up as peroxide in the cancer cells to the point of acting in a manner similar to chemotherapy. These tumor-toxic dosages can only be obtained by intravenous administration.
#Intravenous_Vitamin_C also does more than just kill cancer cells. It boosts immunity. It can stimulate collagen formation to help the body wall off the tumor. It inhibits Hyaluronidase, an enzyme that tumors use to metastasize and invade other organs throughout the body. It induces apoptosis to help program cancer cells into dying early. It corrects the almost universal scurvy in cancer patients.
Cancer patients are tired, listless, bruise easily, and have a poor appetite. They don't sleep well and have a low threshold for pain. This adds up to a very classic picture of #SCURVY that generally goes unrecognized by their conventional physicians.
When cancer patients receive #IVC, they report that their pain level goes down, and that they are better able to tolerate their chemotherapy. They bounce back quicker since the IVC reduces the toxicity of the chemotherapy and radiation without compromising their cancer cell killing effects. IVC is complementary to oncologic care.
IVC is not "either/or" - it's a good "both/and" proposition. IVC can help cancer patients withstand the effects of their traditional therapies, heal faster, be more resilient to infection, develop a better appetite, and remain more active overall. These things promote a better response to their cancer therapy
Medical Cannabis
Mechanism of Cannabis in Cancer:
1) B cells are immune cells with the highest levels of CB1&CB2 receptors.
2) Cannabinoids can decrease the production of antibodies.
3) In T cells, cannabinoids clearly regulate T cell proliferation as T cell apoptosis is increased by AEA and CBD, AEA and THC decrease the T cell proliferation.
4) Macrophages – TCH increases macrophage apoptosis.
5) Immunomodulation is mainly regulated by inhibiting immune cell mobilization and increasing apoptosis; endocannabinoids decrease neutrophils and macrophage mobilization to sites of inflammation and dendritic cell migration
6) CBD can suppress many transcription factors, including NFAT,AP-1 and NF-kB and this accounts for wide spread suppression of many cytokines.
7) THC inhibits interferon- gamma secretion which is also inhibited by CBD.
8) CBD decreases IL-2 production in T-cells and engagement of both CB receptors reduces IL-2 synthesis.
9) THC &CBD decrease the production and release of IL-6.
10) CBD& THC also attenuate the expression of TNF-α-11.
11) Both CB1 &CB2 receptors are expressed in immune cells, including CD-4 and CD-8 leucocytes, B-cells, NK, monocytes, and neutrophils.
12) ∆9-THC supports the modulation of the Th1/Th2 balance by using the control immune action of Th1 and increasing level of Th2.
Thus, primarily cannabinoids cause their immune-suppressive features in Four pathways:
a) Apoptosis induction.
b) Cell proliferation inhibition
c) Cytokine inhibition.
d) Production and induction of chemokine associated with regulatory T-cells.
